Kachin & Shan State Attacks
n October 2023, the Northern Brotherhood Alliance (MNDAA, TNLA, AA) launched “Operation 1027” against the junta. On 9 October 2023, the military attacked an internally-displaced persons (IDP) camp near Laiza, Kachin State, killing ~29 civilians and injuring 57. There were intense clashes in northern Shan State between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and junta troops. In March 2023, the Pinlaung massacre occurred in Shan State: at least 30 civilians (including monks) were killed by junta forces. According to KIA sources, in 2023 there were 563 clashes with the junta, with the KIA capturing 23 junta bases.
